Introduction

Esztergom, Hungary
My name is Sammi Lonsdale. I am 24 years old, originally from Detroit, Michigan, USA, but I have been living in the Netherlands for the last five years. In this photo essay, I have chosen to focus on the culinary aspects of Central Europe (mostly Slovakia, but other areas will also be included).
I have always had a personal interest in food and drinks from other countries. I enjoy trying foreign dishes and going to grocery stores that house unfamiliar products. I find it interesting that each culture has their own distinct dishes which highlight various spices, meats, and vegetables. It's strange that even though we all have access to the same kinds of food, we prepare and serve it in different ways. Furthermore, we let our local cuisine help define our culture and who we are. How ridiculous is that?

Over the next few days, I hope to discover what role food plays in Central European culture. What sort of things do the people from Central Europe eat and drink? How does this differ from Western European and/or American culture? Finally, what can be learned about Central European culture from food and drink alone?
